research we support
Thanks to our donors’ generosity, the Henry Schueler 41 & 9 Foundation supports groundbreaking pediatric leukemia research that is critical to conquering the medical challenges children face. By partnering with leading researchers and institutions, we are helping shape a life-changing path for the future.
Comprehensive Analysis of Hypodiploid ALL (“HALL”)
We have partnered with some of the world’s leading researchers and physicians studying Hypodiploid-ALL and other high risk leukemias including Dr. Charles Mullighan, MBBS (Hons), MSc, MD at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Dr. Mullighan currently serves as co-leader of the Hematological Malignancies Program and Deputy Director of the St. Jude Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Mullighan holds the William E. Evans Endowed Chair. He is also Medical Director of the St. Jude Biorepository.
The Mullighan Lab at St. Jude uses high-end genomic studies to better understand the pathogenesis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and other high risk leukemias, like hypodiploid.

Our Foundation supports the work of Dr. Mullighan and Lead Researcher, Pankaj Ghate, PhD, who devotes his research to work involving Hypodiploid ALL. Since 2010, our Foundation has supported a full time position in the Mullighan Lab devoted to research involving this leukemia. HALL is rare, with only 124 known U.S. samples, though the Mullighan Lab has successfully developed new cell line models of the disease for further testing in the lab.
Our Foundation’s support has played a role in research which included:
research in action
Through continued donor support, the Foundation has funded critical research roles at St. Jude’s, including the Henry Schueler 41 & 9 Senior Research Technologist position. This ensures ongoing studies that advance our understanding of high-risk leukemia and support future treatment breakthroughs.
Donor Impact in Action
Over the last several years, other families impacted by Hypodiploid-ALL have created their own Foundations formed to drive research into this form of leukemia. They include:
Success stories, like Molly’s remission, highlight the life-changing impact of donor generosity and inspire us to do more . And stories like those of Joe, Christian and Henry remind us of how much we still need to do.
These Foundations have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars that they too contribute to the Mullighan Lab at St. Jude to drive more effective and less toxic treatments for children diagnosed with H-ALL.

We are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with them in our collective effort to find out why this happened to them so we can prevent it from happening to other children.
