Dr. Thomas Walsh, Dr. Matthew McCarthy, and their staffs at Weill Cornell Medicine/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital are concentrating intense efforts in caring for critically ill COVID-19 patients and focusing their research efforts on finding successful, life-saving treatments for this devastating pandemic disease.
We are proud to announce that Dr. McCarthy was the first COVID-19 Attending Physician at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and has helped develop best practices and clinical protocols for frontline clinicians.
At the forefront of COVID-19 research, Drs. Walsh, Small (his Associate) and McCarthy are spearheading an innovative and potentially breakthrough study of Selinexor. This medicine has activity against both the virus and the immune-mediated injury to the lungs.
Dr. Walsh also serves as Associate Investigator on two clinical protocols for Remdesivir, an antiviral agent against SARS CoV-2 and for Sarilumab, an antibody that blocks inflammation that may be harmful to the lung. In addition, Dr. Walsh has developed a database for understanding COVID-19 in patients with hematological malignancies, including patients who are undergoing bone marrow transplantation.
Finally, Dr. Walsh and his Laboratory are also preparing several grant proposals for development of new medicines in treatment of experimental COVID-19.
Dr. Walsh is an Infectious Diseases Physician-Scientist who is fighting at the forefront of the epicenter of COVID-19 in New York City. Serving as a Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics, Microbiology and Immunology at the Weill Cornell Medicine and Attending Physician at New York Presbyterian Hospital, he and his staff treat patients and conduct research for diagnosis and treatment of the most severe and life-threatening infections in seriously ill patients.
In summary, Dr. Walsh, his staff, and colleagues are now working 24/7 devoted to patient care and research in the battle against COVID-19, which is destroying precious lives and the fabric of our country.
